How do I know if my browser supports 128-bit encryption?

To find out if your current version of Netscape supports 128-bit encryption, follow the instructions below.
Netscape Navigator 2.x: This version does not support 128-bit encryption.
Netscape Navigator 3.x: From the Help menu, select 'About Netscape'. If your browser provides 128-bit encryption, then on this page there will be an RSA logo, along with bolded wording that contains the wording "This version supports U.S. security". If the text in this paragraph says "This version supports International security" instead, then 128-bit encryption is not provided with your version of the browser.
Netscape Navigator 4.x: From the Help menu, select 'About Communicator'. Scroll down this page until you see the bolded paragraph that begins with the words "This version supports U.S. security". If the text in this paragraph does not say this, then 128-bit encryption is not provided with your version of the browser. Alternatively, you can go to a page that puts your browser into secure mode (the lock on the left side of the Status Bar along the bottom of your browser window will close, or lock). Once in secure mode, select the Security icon on the Navigation Toolbar, then the 'Open Page Info' button on the subsequent screen (which should be labeled 'Encryption'). In the bottom section of the ensuing screen, a 'Security:' field should be present which will have the phrase '128 bit' in it if the browser supports strong encryption.

How do I obtain a browser that supports 128-bit encryption?

If you found that your current browser does not support 128-bit encryption, you can obtain the particular browser you would like to use by following the instructions provided.
You can either purchase the browser on CD-ROM from Netscape by calling (650) 937-3777, or you can download a free browser from the Netscape Web site by following the steps below. Printing a copy of this page may be helpful.

Download time could require two hours. If you have trouble downloading, please contact Netscape Customer Service by calling (800) 411-0707.

  1. Click "Download Now" to go to Netscape's download site.
  2. Enter information regarding your operating system (e.g., Windows 95), preferred language, and desired browser.
  3. Select "Strong U.S./Canada-only Encryption" as your browser type and click "Download for Free".
  4. Provide citizenship and contact information.
  5. Review the download and installation instructions.
  6. Once the download is complete, install your new browser by double-clicking the setup.exe file, and return to First Union to access your accounts.

How do I know if I'm viewing a secure Web page?

It is also important to know when your secure browser is in secure mode and when it is not. To find out how your current browser indicates it is entering and exiting secure mode, see the information listed below for your particular browser. In addition to the browser-specific indicators mentioned below, many of these browser versions have options that you can set to display a dialog box warning you whenever you are entering and exiting a secure area of a web site. See your browser documentation for further information on these options.
Netscape Navigator 2.x: Please note that secure mode for this version only provides 40-bit encryption. This version of the Netscape browser uses a key in the left-hand side of the Status Bar to indicate when you are entering and exiting secure session mode. When you are not in secure mode, the key is broken. When entering a secure session, the key becomes solid or unbroken.
Netscape Navigator 3.x: This version of the Netscape browser uses a key in the left-hand side of the Status Bar to indicate when you are entering and exiting secure session mode. When you are not in secure mode, the key is broken. When entering a secure session, the key becomes solid or unbroken.
Netscape Navigator 4.x: This version of the Netscape browser uses a padlock in the left-hand side of the Status Bar to indicate when you are entering and exiting secure session mode. When entering a secure session, the padlock closes, or locks. When you are not in secure mode, the padlock opens, or unlocks.
