How do I know if
my browser supports 128-bit encryption?
To find out if your current version of Internet Explorer supports
128-bit encryption, follow the instructions below. |
| |
Internet Explorer 3.x: |
Use Window's 95's "Find" utility on
the Start menu to search for the "SCHANNEL.DLL" file
in your Windows, or Windows/System directory. Right click once
on the file with your mouse. Choose "properties" from
the list that will appear, then click the "version"
tab at the top of the Properties dialog box. The version information
will include a description field, which will read "U.S./Canada
Only, Not for Export" if the 128-bit version is installed,
or "PCT/SSL Security Provider (Export Version)" if
40-bit encryption is installed. |
| |
Internet Explorer 4.x or above: |
From the "Help" menu, select "About
Internet Explorer". The following window will say: "Cipher
Strength: 128-bit supported" in the middle of the page
if 128-bit encryption is provided. Otherwise, it will say: "Cipher
Strength: 40-bit supported". |
How do I obtain
a browser that supports 128-bit encryption?
If you found that your current browser does not support 128-bit
encryption, you can obtain the particular browser you would
like to use by following the instructions provided. |
| |
You can either purchase the browser on CD-ROM
from Microsoft by calling (800) 485-2048, or you can download
a free browser from the Microsoft Web site.
If you are currently using Internet Explorer without 128-bit
encryption, then you may download a "patch" to improve
your encryption. Otherwise, you will need to download an entire
new browser. Download time for a patch should be under 20 minutes,
while downloading a browser could require two hours. If you
have trouble downloading, please contact Microsoft Customer
Service by calling (425) 635-7123. In Canada, call (905) 568-4494.
Follow these steps to download a new browser or patch. Printing
a copy of this page may be helpful.
- Click "Download Now" to go to Microsoft's download
site.
- Review download information, then click "Start Downloading".
- Select "Extra Security 128-bit Browser".

How do I know if
I'm viewing a secure Web page?
It is also important to know when your secure browser is in
secure mode and when it is not. To find out how your current
browser indicates it is entering and exiting secure mode, see
the information listed below for your particular browser. In
addition to the browser-specific indicators mentioned below,
many of these browser versions have options that you can set
to display a dialog box warning you whenever you are entering
and exiting a secure area of a web site. See your browser documentation
for further information on these options. |
